TikTok Posting Guide: How to Reach a Target Country Audience

Share

We found no setting that lets you choose which country sees a normal post, but you can make your videos clearly relevant to the audience you want. TikTok says your location is one signal among many, and that how viewers react to a video usually carries more weight than device and account settings such as country and language preference.

A creator post on social media says that posting from outside the US keeps videos away from US viewers. We could not verify this claim, and TikTok does not publish a full list of its ranking signals.

What does TikTok say about how it recommends videos?

TikTok groups the signals behind its For You feed into three kinds:

  • User interactions: what a viewer likes, shares, comments on and follows, and whether they watch a video in full or skip it.
  • Video information: details such as captions, sounds and hashtags, plus the country in which the video was published.
  • Device and account settings: language preference, country setting, location, time zone and device type.

TikTok says that, for most users, interactions are generally weighted more heavily than the rest. It also says device and account settings get lower weight, because people don’t actively choose them as preferences.

TikTok doesn’t share the full list of signals or their exact weights. Anyone selling a formula to push videos into one country is guessing.

Does the country you post from decide who sees your videos?

TikTok lists the publishing country and your country setting as two signals among many, and gives the example that a viewer and creator being in the same country is a weak indicator compared with finishing a video. So location may play a part, but it is unlikely to be the whole story.

A single account’s analytics screenshot shows what happened, not why.

Don’t try to hide where you are. TikTok’s Terms of Service (the version for regions outside the US, EEA, UK, Switzerland and India) say you may not bypass measures it uses to prevent or restrict access, or create a false identity. Its Community Guidelines don’t allow accounts that try to manipulate the platform or trick the recommendation system, and they prohibit tricks designed to bypass its systems. They say you can have more than one account, for example for fan content or creative expression, but not to deceive others or break the rules. Neither text names VPNs, but deceptive account behavior can lead to a restricted or banned account.

So don’t use location-spoofing tools, don’t buy extra phones or SIM cards to look like you’re somewhere else, and don’t open extra accounts to test or get around how your videos are shown. Make the content itself relevant instead.

How do you prepare a video for a target market?

  • Use the audience’s language. Speak and write in it. When you post, tap More options, then Select video language, so auto-generated captions use the right one. Review and edit the captions afterwards.
  • Add on-screen text. TikTok’s creative guidance for ads says text overlays can increase view time, and suggests trying auto captions. It is written for ads, so treat it as a tip, not a rule.
  • Lead with the payoff. Show or say the main point in the first two seconds. This is practical advice rather than a TikTok rule; TikTok’s creative guidance for ads also says to communicate value early.
  • Choose relevant hashtags and sounds. TikTok lists both as video information. Use a few hashtags that describe the topic, and only sounds you have the right to use.
  • Study local trends. The Trending feed in TikTok Studio can be filtered by region and topic, so you can see what is popular in a region you choose.

Before you post:

  • I chose one target market and language.
  • The video language is set and the captions are checked.
  • The first two seconds show the point of the video.
  • Hashtags and sound fit the topic and the market.
  • I know my planned posting time in the audience’s time zone.
  • I will read the post’s Viewers tab after it has had time to collect views.

When should you post for another time zone?

TikTok lists time zone and day among its signals, and TikTok Studio shows when your viewers are most active. We found no solid official “best time” for each country, so use a method instead of a number:

  1. Open the Viewers tab in TikTok Studio and note your viewers’ most active times.
  2. Convert those times to your own time zone with a world clock.
  3. Choose two or three posting slots and keep them for a few weeks.
  4. Compare each post’s views and viewer locations, and keep the slots that work.

Add the slots to a weekly plan; our guide to How to Plan a Weekly Posting Schedule on eXantria shows how to build a rhythm you can keep.

What should you check in TikTok Studio?

In TikTok Studio, open a post’s video analytics (Overview, Viewers and Engagement) and look at:

  • Viewer locations: the share of viewers by country. TikTok’s EU Digital Markets Act report says TikTok works out approximate location from technical information and, if the user enables it, device GPS. Studio may use similar data, so treat the numbers as a guide, not a headcount.
  • Followers vs non-followers: shows whether people outside your current audience found the video.
  • New vs returning viewers: shows whether you are reaching new people.
  • Traffic sources: how people found the video, such as the For You feed, your profile, the Following feed, sounds or search.
  • Watch time and retention: if viewers leave early, rework the opening.

One post with a high share from a single country is not a trend. Compare several posts, and change one thing at a time, such as language, topic or posting time.

FAQ

Is it true TikTok won’t show my videos to the US if I post from another country?

TikTok hasn’t said that. It lists country setting and publishing country among many signals, and says a shared country is a weaker signal than finishing a video. A creator report like this is unverified and can’t prove a cause.

Should I use a VPN or buy a local phone to look like I’m in the US?

No. TikTok’s rules ban tricks to bypass its systems and false identities, and your account could be restricted. Focus on language, topic, captions and timing instead.

Can I get most of my views from one country?

Possibly, but no one can promise it. Results depend on your content, your niche and how viewers react. The Viewers tab shows what actually happens.

Start your plan today

Pick one target market, one language and two posting slots. Post for a few weeks, then read the Viewers tab and adjust. Before you send viewers from TikTok to an outside page, check TikTok’s current rules on promotion and links.
